This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a pendant and radio-controlled overhead crane in accordance with South African legislation and industry best practices.

The programme follows a blended learning approach, combining self-study, classroom training, practical application, and workplace experience. Learners are required to complete the theoretical components prior to attending the classroom session, ensuring a more focused and effective learning experience.

The course covers key areas including safety precautions, legislation, crane components, inspections, lifting principles, slinging methods, and the correct use of lifting equipment. Emphasis is placed on hazard identification, risk control, and safe operational practices.

Upon completion of the self-study component, learners will attend a 5-day classroom session where the facilitator will reinforce critical knowledge, guide practical training, and prepare learners for assessment. This includes:
• Day 1–2: Revision and consolidation of theoretical knowledge
• Day 3–4: Practical training and application
• Day 5: Final assessment

Following the classroom training, learners are required to complete a workplace logbook to demonstrate continued competence in a real working environment.

This course is aligned to the relevant unit standard and contributes towards the development of competent, responsible, and safety-conscious overhead crane operators.
